Located in the southwestern part of the country, not far from the famous Nazca Lines, its territory is mostly desert. There, in the middle of a vast plain, a large complex is under construction: a 100-hectare area enclosed by a wall featuring a concrete watchtower. These are the works for the Ica Mega-prison, the project to build the largest prison in the Andean country, with a capacity for 3,168 inmates (men and women) distributed across 944 cells. The macro-prison was designed in Asturias: it is a product of Impulso, an engineering firm located in the Llanera Technology Park with a specialized architecture department.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ft-ad ft-ad--roba ft-ad--robaNotext ft-helper-hide-md\">\n<div class=\"ft-ad--sticky\">\n<div id=\"movil-div-gpt-ad_300dcha-7\" title=\"cpm_r_dcha\" data-ad-position=\"300dcha-7\" data-type-ad=\"mobile\">\n<p class=\"ft-text\">For years, successive Peruvian governments have been promoting the construction of large-scale prisons to solve the serious overcrowding problems within the country&#8217;s prison population. Impulso&#8217;s design dates back to 2015 and construction did not begin until 2018, but the project was halted in 2020 due to legal disputes between the executing consortium and the Government.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ft-ad ft-ad--roba ft-ad--robaNotext ft-helper-hide-md\">\n<div class=\"ft-ad--sticky\">\n<div id=\"movil-div-gpt-ad_300dchab-7\" title=\"cpm_r_dchab\" data-ad-position=\"300dchab-7\" data-type-ad=\"mobile\">After four years of stagnation, Dina Boluarte&#8217;s administration recently announced its intention to resume the project and make the Ica Mega-prison a reality. However, the delays have increased the cost of such a monumental work: from the \u20ac89 million initially budgeted, the latest figures published by the Peruvian press point to around \u20ac174 million, nearly double.<\/div>\n<div title=\"cpm_r_dchab\" data-ad-position=\"300dchab-7\" data-type-ad=\"mobile\">\n<p class=\"ft-text\">The Ica facility is not the only macro-prison planned by Impulso, which in the same contract obtained the design for a similar prison located in the Socabaya district, in the Arequipa region. This project is also years behind schedule, and the Peruvian Government has promised that permits to reactivate the works will be processed before the end of 2024.
