IMPULSO investigates the technological development of production plants related to alternative food sources for aquaculture.

Impulso Industrial Alternativo, S.A. is currently undertaking the following experimental development project “New food source for aquaculture with high content in polyunstaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and proteins through Nereis diversicolor industrial cultivation obtained from large volume water recirculation systems waste”.

The above mentioned project, led by Impulso Industrial Alternativo, is being executed with the collaboration with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) and the Regional Service for Agri-food Research and Development (SERIDA), pubic organization of the Principality of Asturias.

The project aims to develop an intensive polychaetes cultivation based on the employment of residual substances from aquaculture facilities. In particular, the residual substances constitute the food source for the fishes from those closed aquaculture facilities. Therefore, the objective is to produce an alternative food source from the fishmeal, which currently constitutes the main source of nutrition for aquaculture species. As a result, the major problem of the absence of alternative nutritive sources which can provide essential amino acids would be solved.

The project is being co-founded by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness; within the framework of the National Research, Development and Innovation Plan 2013-2016 and by The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the National Programme for Research Aimed at the Challenges of Society 2015 with the following file number RTC-2015-3248-2.
